Daal Dhokli

The Dhokli is made from flour and are like little dumplings in your dal. Essentially making this a one pot meal as it has everything you need.
It can be time consuming the first time you make it, but it is worth it.
Dal Dhokli - FULL Recipe

Ingredients
For the dal
- 1/2 cup split green moong dal
- 1/2 cup tur dal
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1-2 tbsp of channa dal
- 2 tbsp of ghee/oil
- 1/4 tsp whole cumin
- 1/4 tsp carom (ajwain)
- Pinch of asafoetida
- 2 tsp chopped ginger
- 1 1/2 chopped garlic
- Few finely chopped green chillies
- 6-8 finely chopped curry patta leaves
- 1 medium size onion
- chopped
- 1 medium to big tomato chopped into small cubes
- Salt to taste
- Red chilli powder to taste
- 1/2 tsp kashmiri chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
For the dhokli
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- Pinch of turmeric powder
- 2 tsp oil
- 1/4 tsp of carom (ajwain)
- Pinch of whole cumin
- Knead all of the above with little water and keep aside
- Cover with a muslin cloth /plate /bowl
For the tadka
- 1 tbsp of ghee/oil
- Pinch of panch phoren
- 1 tsp of chopped ginger garlic
- 2-3 chopped curry patta leaves
- 1 tsp chopped onion
- 1/2 tsp chopped green chilli
- 2 whole red chillies
- 1/4 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
Method
For the dal
- Wash and soak the dal in water for 30 minutes
- Take a pressure cooker add the ghee to it and warm the ghee a little
- Rub the carom seeds and whole cumin on your palm for 20-30 seconds Then add it to the ghee
- Stir for few seconds ,then add the chopped green chillies and curry patta leaves
- Stir fry for few seconds then add the chopped ginger garlic
- Stir fry for 30-40 seconds Then add the chopped onion
- Stir fry for a minute or so Then add salt to taste ,turmeric powder, chilli powder, kashmiri chilli powder and cumin powder and stir fry for few minutes
- If the masala starts catching at the bottom add 3-4 tbsp of water
- Now add the chopped tomato and stir fry for few minutes
- Then bring the flame to low and cover the masala and let it cook for few minutes
- When the masala becomes totally soft
- Add the dal and stir fry for few minutes
- Then add the water Mix everything well ,sprinkle chopped coriander leaves and close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook till 1 whistle .
- Then remove from flame and let the pressure cooker open naturally.
For the dhokli
- Knead the whole wheat flour with all the ingredients given above.
- cover and keep with a muslin cloth/plate /bowl .
- Take the kneaded flour and break into small pieces ,like a tablet ,press it between your thumb and index finger so that it becomes flat
- Make such tiny dhokli of the flour which has been kneaded and keep aside .
- When the pressure cooker opens cook the dal on low flame for few minutes
- Then slowly add the dhokli to the dal ,mix it in gently
- Then cover and cook on low flame 7-10 minutes, stirring in between.
Now for the tadka
- Take a small pan add 1 tbsp of ghee
- Let the ghee get warm then rub the panch phoren on your palm for few seconds then add to the ghee in the pan
- In few seconds add the chopped ginger-garlic ,chopped onion, chopped green chilli , chopped curry patta leaves ,whole red chillies and chilli powder
- Stir fry all of the above for a minute or so
- Then add to the dal dhokli
- Mix it in gently
- Cook for a minute or so .
- Done
